The Gunner Government has failed Territorians so badly that the Matt Patterson the Alice Springs Mayor and our elected Councillors have been left with no choice but to send a letter to dozens of federal politicians in a desperate plea for help to control the spiralling rates of crime in our town.
They along with many of us feel that our town had reached a “breaking point”. I have provided a response back to the Mayor, it will be interesting to see if the Chief Minister will respond, of more interest will he actually come to Alice Springs and front up to the people of our community.
In the NT News today there were 3 articles on crime in Alice Springs. The Gunner Government has failed to deal with the escalating crime rate and Territorians are left to pay the price.
The current systems that Labor have in place to deal with reducing crime are clearly not working and things are getting worse.
The CLP would address these issues as a priority to ensure the safety of all Territorians.
Our number one policy is to put the rights of victims above the rights of offenders and provide better victim support. We are horrified that the Gunner Government will give $35m to youth offenders without even making them pay for their crimes.
We have proactively brought our own legislation into parliament to: make breach of bail condition an offence and have a presumption against bail for repeat offenders. This was gunned down by Labor. We have also fought against their watering down of youth justice legislation which has led to this mess of young people being above the law.
We would take the control of Youth Justice out of Territory Families and put it in Corrections so there is proper custodial oversight of offenders.
The Police portfolio would sit with me as Chief Minister because community safety is the highest priority. Police resourcing must be sorted.
We would create ‘sentenced to a skill’ boot camp to ensure offenders are given the opportunity to learn a skill to get them work ready.
Tackle alcohol and drug abuse, bring back truancy officers to clamp down on non-attendance at school, mandatory community service, we will not raise the criminal age of responsibility or abolish mandatory sentencing.
Crime is a major issue that must be dealt with.
Territorians should be safe and should not accept these high levels of crime.
It’s just not good enough.
