November 2022 Sittings insight

I’ve spent the last week in Darwin for Parliamentary Sittings and we have another week yet. After this week who knows what next week will bring.

It’s been an interesting week both in and outside of Parliament listening to Ministers and hearing about some of the chaos going on within the Labor Government.

Minister Chansey Paech and Minister Paul Kirby were overheard yelling at each other while arguing over Paech’s extreme changes to the Anti Discrimination Act.

The Fyles Government is saying the new offence provisions in the Anti Discrimination Act would only apply if there was a “profound or serious effect” even though these words are not mentioned anywhere in the legislation!

Natasha Fyles has no problem finding a bed for an intoxicated adult every night of the week but she can’t find a bed or a place of safety for a child ‘at risk’.

Labor has scrapped minimum prison sentences for serious and violent crimes, including domestic violence in circumstances where a person chokes, strangles or suffocates their partner or kids; threatens a person with a firearm or offensive weapon; or indecently assaults a person under the age of 16!

On one hand, Ministers believe that crime is under control but, on the other hand, they are sending 45 extra police officers to Alice Springs to try and deal with a crime emergency. The Police Minister and the Commissioner will not say how many police officers are being pulled out of Tennant Creek and from the Barkly bush stations!

Labor says they have made record investments in our police force but they can’t explain the 10% attrition rate or why the overall number of police in the Territory has decreased by 35!

For the 5th time, we called for an Inquiry into the police crisis but Labor shut us down after just 32 seconds!

The Aboriginal Affairs Minister made changes to the Fisheries Act and said she really didn’t need to consult much with the NT Seafood Council or the Amateur Fishing Association of the NT, only the Northern Land Council

The Treasurer read her report, telling Territorians that since coming to Government they’ve added a Billion dollars of debt each year they’ve governed taking our debt to $7.638 Billion for 246,000 people.

The Chief Minister wants everyone to believe there are no problems in the NT Health system even though there has been eight code yellows at the Royal Darwin Hospital, one in Katherine, staff shortages, mass resignations, and closure of remote clinics!

Labor has scrapped the Alice Springs Masters Games again!

It’s just not good enough, Territorians deserve better!
